Prior to entering Parliament Michael began professional life as a cadet with The Daily Advertiser. At the age of 27 he was appointed to the newspaper’s editorship, becoming the youngest person appointed to edit a daily newspaper in Australia at the time. He is most proud of the significant part he played in helping to save Wagga Wagga’s Royal Australian Air Force base from closure in 1997, which not only resulted in the retention of the base but the expansion of its role in the region. Michael was elected as The Nationals’ Member for Riverina on 21 August 2010. Following the 2013 Federal Election, Michael was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance and in September 2015 he was then appointed Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister. In this role, Michael worked alongside then Nationals’ Leader and Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Warren Truss, in the administration of regional development programmes. Following the announcement of Mr Truss’ retirement in February 2016 Michael become the Assistant Minister for Defence and after the 2016 Federal Election, Michael was appointed to the Ministry as the Federal Small Business Minister – advocating for the nation’s 3.2 million small businesses. On 26 February 2018, Michael became the 14th Leader of The Nationals and the 18th Deputy Prime Minister of Australia. Raised on family farms at Marrar and Brucedale while going to school in Wagga Wagga – Michael has lived and worked in the Riverina all his life with his wife Catherine and three children. Michael is a keen sportsman and is passionate about horse racing, Australian football, rugby league and cricket. Michael also has a keen interest in military history particularly the First World War.

With a 22-year career at Telstra Corporation, he is the Chief Scientist (in which role he acted as a “forward scout” looking at the longer-term technology directions and technology disruption that will impact Telstra and its customers), Chief Technology Officer and Head of Innovation at Telstra, and Managing Director of Telstra Research Laboratories. Before joining Telstra in September 1995, Professor Bradlow was Professor of Computer Engineering at the University of Wollongong in Australia and Professor of Electrical Engineering (Digital Systems) at the University of Cape Town. Professor Bradlow is a graduate in electrical engineering from the University of Cape Town in 1973 and received the D.Phil. degree for research in experimental nuclear physics from the University of Oxford. He has also attended the Stanford Executive Program. He is an Emeritus Professor of the University of Wollongong, a Professorial Fellow of the University of Melbourne, and a recipient of a Centenary Medal from the Commonwealth of Australia. Hugh has been a company director for a number of innovation-based entities, including Silicon Quantum Computing Pty Ltd, Allen & Buckeridge, Seed Stage Ventures Board of Directors, Telstra R&D Management Pty Ltd (Executive Chair), Wollongong Uniadvice (Pty) Ltd, Telecommunications Society of Australia and IEEE Communications Society Board of Governors amongst others. He is globally recognised as a thought leader in telecommunications and was elected as the joint 2009 Australian Telecommunications Ambassador of the Year, named by Global Telecom Business as one of the most 100 most influential telecommunications executives in the world and Smart Company designated him as one of the 12 most influential people in Australian ICT. During his career at Telstra he has given over 400 presentations, being in high demand as a speaker on technology topics and innovation. In 2005 Gert-Jan de Graaff was appointed as Managing Director of ASDC AB, the Company that manages and develops the commercial activities in the terminals of Stockholm-Arlanda Airport in Sweden. Between 2007 and 2012 Gert-Jan held senior executive roles with Brisbane Airport Corporation Pty Ltd, including General Manager Commercial Services and General Manager Strategic Planning & Development. Prior to his return to Brisbane Airport in 2018 Mr de Graaff lead the bid for Galeão / Rio de Janeiro Airport in Brazil on behalf of Royal Schiphol Group and his most recent position was President & CEO of JFKIAT LLC, the private operators of Terminal 4 at John F Kennedy International Airport since 2014.  Mr Strambi has a wealth of experience in the aviation sector both in Australia and abroad spanning 40 years. Prior to commencing at APAC, Mr Strambi was the Chief Executive Officer of Qantas Airways Domestic, a role he held for three years following four years as the airline’s Group Executive Operations. Between 2001 and 2008 Lyell was based in London, working in senior roles at Virgin Atlantic that included Executive Director – Airline Services and followed by six years as Chief Operating Officer. As APAC’s leader, Lyell is responsible for overseeing a direct workforce of 300 staff and assets valued at over $5 billion. Lyell is a Graduate and Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Member of the Australian Institute of Management. He holds Bachelor of Business in Accounting and Finance and is a Graduate of GE’s Learning Centre Crotonville and the Australian Graduate School of Management. As a Director, Lyell has held positions with Star Track Express, Traveland and Southern Cross Distribution Systems and was President of the Royal Flying Doctors SE Section from 2014 to 2017. As Australia’s Director of Aviation Safety, Shane’s day-to-day responsibilities involve the exercise of CASA’s statutory functions including the development, implementation and enforcement of regulations. As CEO, Shane’s day-to-day responsibilities include managing all activities undertaken by CASA, its organisational capacity, executive-decision making and day-to-day operational, financial, personnel and administrative activities for an organisation of around 800 staff. Immediately prior to joining CASA, Shane was Deputy Secretary, Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development. In this position his responsibilities included the Office of Transport Security, Aviation and Airports, Local Government and Territories and the Western Sydney Airport project. Shane has extensive policy, regulatory and business management experience at senior levels in the Australian Public Service. His roles have included Deputy Secretary/Chief Operating Officer at the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Deputy Secretary Intelligence and Security and Deputy Secretary Strategy in the Department of Defence, Deputy CEO of CASA and Deputy President of the Repatriation Commission. Before joining the APS in 1989, Shane had a 15 year career as an Army Officer, where he served in various Australian and overseas locations. Shane also studied Bahasa Indonesia at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Marion worked at both Atlanta and Sydney airports during the 1996 and 2000 Olympics and was in Glasgow during the 2014 Commonwealth Games. This provided the expertise that helped the Gold Coast Airport deliver its highly successful Commonwealth Games operation in 2018. Marion has strong ties with many Gold Coast tourism organisations through her past work on the Tourism Advisory Board for Bond University. She is currently on the advisory Board for Southern Cross University Business School and is on the Board of Trustees for the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Foundation. Marion is also a member of the Study Gold Coast Advisory Board. Marion was a past winner of the International Woman’s Day Leadership Award for the Gold Coast and an Alumni of the Year award nominee for the Southern Cross University.

While at Lendlease, Carl was Development Director of the significant Varsity Lakes project, responsible for both the residential and commercial aspects of this development before being elevated to the national role of General Manager Town Centres. As GM of Town Centres Carl was responsible for planning and delivery of the retail, commercial, and industrial projects nationally within the Lendlease Communities portfolio. Carl has been with QAL since 2016 and is responsible for leading the company’s property and infrastructure strategy, which includes a large program of works in coming years across Gold Coast, Townsville, Mt Isa and Longreach airports. Among the major project’s Carl is responsible for at Gold Coast Airport are the airport hotel and the terminal redevelopment. From 2013 till February 2017 he was the commander of the daily police unit (patrolling team) at Brussels National Airport. This unit of 120 police officers is in charge of the ‘normal’ police interventions at the airport (traffic issues, criminal investigations, public order and arrival of VIPS). On the day of the attack on March 22, 2016, at 7.30 he was at the airport’s police station. This is less than 75 meters away from the Departure Hall. At 7.58 the two explosions took place. Together with several of his colleagues, he ran into the Departure Hall and helped as much as he could. The first hours and days after the attack he will never forget. In May 2016 he testified before the Parliamentary Investigation Commission.

From 1999 to 2015 Dennis was the Managing Director of Queensland Airports Ltd, the largest operator of regional airports in Australia. Its portfolio of airports included Gold Coast, Townsville, Mount Isa and Longreach Airports. He was the first General Manager of Cairns International Airport after its transfer from Commonwealth ownership to the Cairns Port Authority in 1981 and held a similar position at Newcastle Airport following its lease to Port Stephens and Newcastle City Councils in 1992. Dennis Chant is an Honourary Life Member and former board member of the Australian Airports Association and an Adjunct Professor at the School of Aviation at Griffith University. He was formerly the Chairman of Airports Council International – Asia Pacific Region and a member of its world governing board. It is the central coordination point for CASA’s international engagement with ICAO. The Division provides services for pilot and aircraft maintenance engineer licensing, aviation medicine, organisational approvals and the civil aircraft register.
